The Primary focus of this Certification Should not CCIE point of view as the focus for the CCIE is ISP or Service Provider (More of a support & Implement role). With the New trends in the Data Center Architecture, and HPC environment growing the CCDE should be focused on high performance routing LANs or MAN’s, with Multiprotocol support like the Unified Fabric of Cisco Nexus Switches. The WAN would be a secondary focus as Ethernet from a Service provider has become much cheaper and more practical.
A Unified Fabric for the Data Center?
The holy grail of data center networking has been discussed for a number of years and many have attempted to design a single technology to deliver on all of the networking requirements of data center applications. The design goal is reasonably simple: design a single data center transport that can simultaneously transmit IP and Fibre Channel traffic over a single connection. The problem is, it just isn’t that simple. Data center managers expect that the transport must include sophisticated management capabilities to enable accurate depiction of what is happening within the fabric; the fabric must offer high performance and low latency, robust security; the fabric must not – absolutely ever – drop a single storage frame. Oh, and it must be able to scale to thousands – if not tens of thousands – of devices, support 10/100/1000 and 10GE attached servers, support legacy applications, be virtualizable, enable efficient utilization of IT assets, and reduce power and cooling overhead. If it can make coffee, that’s a bonus. OK, the last one is a stretch, but you get the point. Continue reading ‘Network Infrastructure Architect Certification (CCDE)’ »

I was honored this week to be invited to the Cisco Network Design Expert (CCDE) and Network Infrastructure Architect beta program (NW filed a report a couple weeks ago about this new certification). This is a private beta program for senior engineers and existing CCIEs to help Cisco develop a new “design focused” expert level certification program. Furthermore, Cisco is contemplating how to create an “architect” certification for the most experienced and knowledgeable engineers. During the recent Networkers-event, Cisco announced a new expert-level certification, the Cisco Certified Design Expert (CCDE), for high-level IT professionals who design and architect enterprise networks.
Responding to strong customer demand to collaborate on network architecture strategy, and not just implementation, Cisco is introducing the new Cisco CCDE certification for design experts. On par with the CCIE certification, CCDE applies a solutions-based educational approach and recognises the growing number of networking experts who have in-depth infrastructure design knowledge, which enables them to assess network business requirements and translate those requirements into effective network designs.
The CCDE certification provides further career advancements for networking experts in the information technology industry. Approximately 30 percent of today’s CCIE community is responsible for network design each day; however, these design experts are no longer involved in hands-on configuration, but rather in strategic design and architecture. The CCDE certification was created to provide IT professionals who specialize in network design with a prestigious credential that recognizes senior-level expertise and provides incentives for the experienced practitioner to continue his or her professional development.
Like the CCIE, the CCDE will have a qualification exam and an eight-hour hands-on exam.

Cisco Certified Design Expert (CCDE) identifies those with expert-level knowledge and skills in Infrastructure Design. CCDE is parallel to CCIE in terms of difficulty, and expertise. It emphasizes network design principles and theory and recognizes expertise of designers that have the knowledge to assess network business requirements and can translate them into technical specifications to be incorporated into successful designs. Expert Level Network Design and Architecture Experience
CCDE Assesses advanced Network Infrastructure Design Principles and Fundamentals for large networks. A CCDE can demonstrate an ability to develop solutions which address planning, design, integration, optimization, operations, security and ongoing support focused at the infrastructure level for customer networks.
Prerequisites for CCDE
There are no formal prerequisites for CCDE certification. Other professional certifications or training courses are not required.
Recommended Training and Experience
It is expected that the candidate will have an in-depth understanding of the topics in the exam blueprints, a minimum of seven years job experience, and a thorough understanding of networking infrastructure principles. Please view the written exam information page for more details.
Step One: CCDE Written Exam
You must pass the two-hour, written qualification exam which covers advanced networking infrastructure design principles and concepts. Once you pass the qualification exam, you are then eligible to schedule the practical exam.
Written Exam Information
Written exams are scheduled and taken at Pearson Vue, Cisco’s authorized testing vendor. Please visit the link below for more details and to schedule exams. Be sure to use the same candidate ID number for every exam that you take. If you use a different ID number, you will create a different record in the CCIE database and you will need to contact CCIE support for help in merging the records.
